These are not just little tips and techniques, but a full course of learning how to see, think, and draw like an artist.

This gallery of pencil drawings is a true sampling of recent work by actual Deborah Mends Art students.

While one or two students had had a little previous experience with drawing instruction, apparent in their "before" drawings, most were complete and utter beginners, and quite unsure they would be able to learn to draw anything at all. Undertaking my intensive Drawing Step by Step five-day workshop gave them the chance to learn to see like an artist.

Mary

Before

Mary drew her hand on Friday night, before my instruction.

After

And she drew her hand like this the next morning.

Before

She drew this portrait from memory of a friend on Friday night as well.

After

And drew this portrait of another student by the fourth day of my teaching her.

Before

Last, Mary's self-portrait before I started teaching her.

After

...and her self-portrait after five days of instruction.

There is nothing more wonderful than seeing the glow students take on when they start to realize that they can draw - and well.  In addition to being able to make beautiful pencil drawings, students comment after a day or two of my Drawing Basics course that they literally see the world in a different way:  "I never noticed how beautiful empty space is" or "I just couldn't stop staring at the way the light fell" or "I never realized before just how little I was seeing the world around me".

Jennifer

Before

Jennifer drew her hand on Friday night, before my instruction.

After

She drew her hand this way the next day, on Saturday morning.

Before

She had drawn this portrait of a friend from memory before instruction.

After

Yet four days later drew this portrait of a fellow student.

Before

Jennifer had drawn this self-portrait on Friday night, before my instruction.

After

Only five days later, she drew this self-portrait.

Students come from every walk of life, and I see them all come to the course and leave with successful pencil drawings as good as those in the right hand column of this page.

Geraldine

Before

This was Geraldine's pre-instruction drawing of her hand.

After

The following morning she drew her hand like this.

Before

She drew this portrait of a friend from memory before I started teaching her.

After

But four days later she drew her fellow student in this manner.

Before

Finally, while she had drawn this self-portrait before instruction...

After

...by the end of the five days she had drawn this self-portrait.

Nathalie

Before

Nathalie's pre-instruction drawing of her hand looked like this.

After

Yet the very following morning she drew her hand like this.

Before

Nathalie drew a portrait from memory of a friend before my instruction on Friday night.

After

She drew this portrait of another student four days later.

Before

And finally, while Nathalie drew this self-portrait before I began teaching her...

After

...after five days of working with me she drew this self-portrait.
